Spurred by the boom in ecommerce and startups in India and rising investor interest, students from top global business schools are returning to India to jump on the bandwagon - not an easy decision given that studying overseas can be three times costlier and loans need to be repaid.

Vibha Kagzi, a Harvard Business School graduate and co-president of the Harvard Club of Mumbai, which represents all the university's colleges, said that earlier, the only thing that kept people from coming back to India was their career — the salaries at home were just not commensurate.

"Now, however, there has been so much uptick with Flipkart and Snapdeal and Amazon coming to India... there are so many Harvard people working at all these organisations... all alumni from different Harvard schools. Now these companies can afford to pay commensurate salaries to people and they can attract top talent," said Kagzi. For many, it is an emotional decision so that they can stay close to family and old friends, she said. "For others it's a patriotic decision: trying to give back to a country that now needs them the most. I believe a blend of the above three motivations leads to the ultimate decision of returning home," she said.
