Yale University is an American private Ivy League research university that was founded in 1701. It is the third-oldest institute of higher education in US and one of nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence. In 1889, ‘Handsome Dan’, a dog, became the official mascot of the university. Yale College undergraduates follow a liberal arts curriculum with departmental majors and are organized into a social system of residential colleges.
