The Leland Stanford Junior University was founded on 11 November, 1885 by California Senator Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane. The university was built as a memorial after they lost their only child Leland Jr. to typhoid in 1884. The university opened on October 1, 1891 as a tuition-free institute. The Stanford’s family and the founding President Davis Starr Jordan wanted the university to be affordable and it is evident even today. The German motto of the university is “Die Luft der Freiheit weht” that translates to “the wind of freedom blows”. The university was built on an 8180-acre Palo Alto stock form that Leland had purchased a few years before that. It is located in the city of Palo Alto in California, United States.
