When it comes to academics, whether your child decides to study in America or United Kingdom, every country has its own strengths and style. Apart from USA and UK, there are a host of countries that offer excellent educational ambience and boast of a strong academic lineage. Here is a list of top seven countries that you might want to consider to pursue higher studies abroad:

The United States

USA is home to some of the world’s leading universities including the Ivy League universities, MIT, Stanford and more! High academic standards, superior faculty, cultural diversity, are some of the factors that have always attracted young minds to explore opportunities at these institutes. USA draws maximum number of international students and tops the list of the most sought-after study destinations. The most appealing aspect of US universities is the breadth of study that they provide students with. Many colleges allow you to apply through the Common Application, if you are applying for undergraduate college admission. As of 2017-18 admission season, 696 colleges and universities accept the Common Application. Some colleges may require you to apply directly, while a few give you an option to either do a direct application or go through the Common App.

Undergraduate programs are 4 years long, thus you have more time and flexibility to decide (or change or build) on your major. Most universities in the US offer a wide range of courses, that give students the flexibility and diversity to widen their academic opportunities or venture into cross-disciplinary areas.

United Kingdom

Age-old academic tradition, prestigious universities and the charm of the British Isle render UK its popularity among foreign students. Stalwarts like Oxford and Cambridge University have set a standard of academic excellence for centuries and are the coveted institutions for furthering higher education. You apply through a centralized body called ‘the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service’, or UCAS as an undergraduate student. The undergraduate programs typically last for 3 years, and most Masters and MBA degrees tend to be one-year long. If you want to pursue a more focused stream, UK colleges will offer the scope to study subjects in depth.

Australia

Australia is currently the third most popular destination for international students. 8 of the 100 top universities in the world can be found in Australia, and with over 1,100 institutions offering over 22,000 courses students can study anything from anthropology to zoology. You also have the possibility of earning scholarships and grants, which can further help lower the cost of studying in Australia. These are offered by the Australian Government, Universities, and a number of other public and private organizations.

Germany

Germany is the fourth most popular international destination for higher education. The carrot? German educational department has a well-defined scholarship program for both local as well as international students that would allow them to stay, study and work on a huge waiver. Thus, higher education provided by public institutions including universities are either free or there is an extremely affordable tuition fee.

Canada

Canada is fast becoming a favorite study abroad destination because of its world-class universities, international student facilities and peaceful environment. McGill University, Concordia University, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia are some of the top-ranking universities globally. Bachelor’s degree generally is a 3-year program (4 years for an honors degree) offered by both colleges and universities, which gives you the flexibility to either major/double major in a specialized field/fields or pursue general fields. Unlike many countries, it not only grants foreign students work permit but other lucrative opportunities like securing long term job positions or becoming residents.

Singapore

Singapore has grown to become the educational hub for Asia. It hosts some premier institutions, and the Singapore government has built collaborations with the best institutes around the world, such as MIT and Yale, to provide an excellent and well-rounded education. The Singapore government provides aid to eligible international students. They also offer a Tuition Grant Scheme to help students with the costs of tertiary education in Singapore. In exchange for the grant international students will sign a Tuition Grant Agreement in which they will be contractually obliged to work in a Singapore entity for 3 years upon graduation.

New Zealand

New Zealand has emerged as a strong option for Indian students in the past 10 years. In 2015, there were over 29,000 Indian students enrolled to study in New Zealand. On a student visa, Indian students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week through the semester; during vacations it can be up to 40 hours. Work permits are provided after graduation. The Post Study Work Visa (Open) allows you to find a job that is relevant to your qualification. It’s valid for 12 months, and during this time you can work for almost any employer in New Zealand. After you have found a job relevant to your qualification you can apply for a Post Study Work Visa (Employer Assisted).

Apart from these, there are many international destinations that are attracting students from around the world. The contenders to the top study destinations are: Sweden, Finland, Austria, Japan, and China. As more top class universities sprout around the world, countries that realize the potential of international education create more gateways and easy policies to bring about the synergy. In India too, some universities have collaborated with foreign educational institutes to provide world class education right at our doorstep. Before you decide on the destination of study, identify what course you’d like to pursue and which universities match your needs. Based on your selection criteria, make a judicious choice, balancing both your requirements and the nature of education available in the country of your choice.
