Lessons From A Pandemic
If you are feeling low and confused with the pandemic, you are not alone. The COVID-19 situation has had a worldwide effect and impacted millions of lives. It is a testing time for all of humanity so, it is with courage, that we must face this situation. Globally, people are adapting to this crisis, whether by self-reflection, changing their lifestyle or by helping their community. Amidst this, there are a few lessons to be learned- as individuals or as a race. While it is easy to give up and fall back into a dull routine, we must make the most of what we have. As a student, books can teach you a lot, but experience comes handy as well.
Take the time to question your opinions and beliefs objectively, and learn a few lessons that this pandemic has for you. It is not an easy job but, who said anything about things being easy? Here is what you can learn from this pandemic.
1. Environmental Protection is a Priority
We live in an age where convenience is in high demand. We do not worry about the price of that convenience. In our quest for innovation and invention, we cannot turn a blind eye to sustainability. Close contact with wildlife and disruption of their habitat are some of the leading causes of viruses borne out of animals. We have nuclear weapons that could flatten the earth but, a minuscule virus brought humanity to its knees. We must reset our priorities and be proactive in protecting our environment.
You will be future leaders, policymakers and businessmen. If you understand this belief now, you will be able to secure natural resources.
2. Life is Unpredictable
We can draw up 10-year plans or flesh out every detail of our life yet, the fact remains, that the future is unpredictable. Some students are in limbo about studying abroad. In an ideal world, we could control our lives, and outcomes but, that is not possible. It is a crucial lesson that we must confront. When we let go of our desire for control, we let go of our anxieties and disappointments. We can open up to different possibilities and adapt to changing scenarios. Schools are relaxing application rules and offering test waivers. Thus, even in such a situation, there is a way to manage your goals. Counter-intuitively, giving up absolute control and being flexible is more liberating.
3. Social Relationships
Living away from your loved ones can be tough, especially if you know what it is like living on campus abroad. In a lock-down and the norm of social distancing, we have realized the importance of being connected with friends, family and peers. Ironical, right? It is a check on the growing trend of individualism. Man is a social animal, and this truth has never been more evident before. No one can be completely alone, so check up on your neighbours, thank providers of essential services and stay connected with your friends. We can be grateful to technology for making this a little easier.
4. Hope Is Unlimited
In the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, with all the wisdom of a five-year-old, Calvin says, “It is never so bad that it couldn’t be worse.” It might sound cynical, but it is optimistic. As a student, you have an abundance of opportunities available to you. Do not let one disappointment bring you down. This pandemic suggests that even when a situation seems impossible to get out of, there is space for hope. Take challenges in your stride and work to overcome them.
Now is the time to push for your dreams and work hard to achieve them. Use this opportunity to grow and become a better version of yourself. You can conquer all that you set your eyes on with perseverance.
