1. Tap into your network
If you’re in college, speak to your classmates. Figure out what internships they have secured whether for this summer or previously. Learn about their experiences to decide if that is something you want to pursue. Similarly, talk to your professors and supervisors. They are likely to know your strengths and where you can apply them. Chances are that their industry connections can get you closer to securing an internship.
2. Cold calls
Cold emails are in vogue. Not many students have the luxury of a connected network. They have to rely on sending emails to the HR team or managers of the companies they want to intern with. This is mostly like shooting in the dark, but writing carefully crafted emails is very important. Do your homework on what the company does, their achievements, and thoroughly explain why you should be given the opportunity to intern with them. However, some companies may have a strict policy against cold calls/emails, they only invite applications. In this case, avoid using this strategy as it may work against your interests.
3. Push your boundaries
Internships are not where you stay cocooned within your comfort zone. If you are an introvert, go for a client-facing role, if you dislike reading, volunteer to proofread any content that the company puts out. Make sure that the company of your choice is willing to let you explore. Instead of being stuck doing the same thing on repeat, ask to take up new things, volunteer ideas, and build lasting relations with your team and supervisor. Your internship must provide the space to pursue all of this.
4. Paid or unpaid
Many students believe that this is the be all end all of choosing an internship. The reality could not be further. Being compensated for your work and time is certainly important. But if the company makes you slog for little learning in the process, you will be losing a valuable opportunity. For some students, financial security may be important to achieve. So it is necessary to balance both compensation and learning scope when pinning down an internship. No internship is perfect at the start, but you can negotiate terms that make the arrangement mutually beneficial. This shows both maturity and industrial skill.
