Engineering (B.E.)

Engineering Programs at the undergraduate level vary from based on institute and country. However, the common program names around the world are Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Bachelor of Engineering (B.E./B.Eng/B.A.I.). The Engineering undergraduate program is one of the most sought after programs in India, and typically lasts for four to five years depending on the major as well as institute.

Course Overview:

Recognition: Globally Recognised

Duration: 4-5 years

Specializations: Civil, Computer Science, Aeronautical, Electrical, Biomedical, etc.

Grading and Assessment: Varies based on country and institute

Global Differences:

Although undergraduate engineering programs are mostly similar in terms of duration and requisite qualifications, some differences do exist.

For instance, institutes in Australia may also offer the B.Eng degree as a six year and eight-year (part-time) sandwich course in which students are undertake professional placement as part of the degree.

German Technical Universities provide Bachelor of Science in engineering degrees rather than a B.Eng degree.

Why undertake an undergraduate program in Engineering? / Is it Right for me?

Graduates of Engineering are in high demand across the globe – both in developing and developed nations as technologies and economies keep constantly growing. As a practical application of mathematics and the different streams of science in real world scenarios, the profession could bring upon a challenge that many enjoy. However, it is also to be noted that courses in engineering can tend to be highly demanding in all aspects – time, money, resources and dedication. If you’re ready to take up the challenge of pursuing engineering, can persevere, and most importantly, are adept at maths and science, Engineering might just be the line of study and profession for you.

Engineering or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc):

It is a common dilemma among students whether to go for a degree in engineering (BE, BTech) or do a Bachelor of Science program. An Engineering program normally has a duration of 4-5 years in contrast to the 3-4 year duration of the Bachelor of Science programs. BSc programs also tend to be less monetarily exacting and more theoretical in nature.

In terms of interest and yields, if you want to see real world applications of classroom concepts engineering is the thing for you. However, if your interest lies in the more theoretical, aspects of science and/or look to enter academia and research, B.Sc is a good choice for you.

In choosing the degree that is correct for you, ask yourself the following questions:

Subjects: What subjects you wish to study?

Curriculum: Review the course content and teaching style thoroughly and ask yourself whether it is what you wish to learn. Do the practical aspects of Engineering interest you?

Career Options: Does the degree put you on a path to realizing your career aspirations? Are you interested in a career in Engineering?

Entry Requirements: Do you have the appropriate entry requirements? E.g. Work experience or appropriate undergraduate degree.

Interests: Do your interests lie in the field of Engineering? Does the prospect of learning and working with real world engineering problems entice you?
